A major water pipe failure in Sør-Varanger, specifically affecting Kirkenes, caused several days of service disruptions that forced the closure of schools and kindergartens and placed the local hospital on red alert. Although water service was restored, authorities advised residents to boil water pending safety testing.

This crisis has prompted discussions regarding Norway’s national water preparedness. Industry representatives from Kystrederiene and the Brønnbåteiernes forening (BREF) have proposed integrating the wellboat fleet into emergency planning. While primarily used in the aquaculture industry for fish treatment and transport, these vessels possess the capability to produce, store, and transport large quantities of fresh water from seawater. BREF noted that the fleet could produce up to 6,000 cubic meters of fresh water per day, suggesting that formal agreements and practical exercises should be established to utilize this resource during community crises.
