In a letter to the university, Kotzian admitted to a “mistake” regarding a personal conversation with a student in November, noting he failed to account for the power imbalance between a professor and a student, though he denied specific allegations made by a student initiative. Following the resignation, Vice President Renate Reitinger has assumed interim leadership duties. While Reitinger and Co-Vice President Maren Wilhelm offered to resign, the University Council rejected those requests. Kotzian will remain at the institution to focus on research but will no longer teach. The university plans to commission an independent external body to investigate recent events and will begin a formal search for a new president. Bavarian Arts Minister Markus Blume emphasized that the allegations must be thoroughly investigated to maintain trust and respect within universities. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-19: Nuremberg Music University President resigns amid abuse of power allegations Rainer Kotzian has resigned as President of the Nuremberg University of Music following allegations of abuse of power.
