The Odisha government has implemented several initiatives focused on nutrition, public health, and social welfare. Initially, the state expanded the Odisha Poshan Mission (OPM) to 18 priority districts to combat malnutrition among children, mothers, and adolescents. This mission-mode approach targeted high-burden areas and Maoist-affected regions, utilizing the Nutrition Tracker for digital monitoring and upgrading infrastructure through the Samruddha Anganwadi Yojana.

Building on these efforts, the government launched the ‘Angan Ka Utsav’ campaign to strengthen health awareness and early childhood development across over 74,000 Anganwadi Centres. During the ninth Rashtriya Poshan Maah celebrations, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi noted that over 46 lakh activities were conducted across the state. He emphasized the importance of family involvement, particularly from fathers, to support nutrition during a child’s first 1,000 days, while crediting frontline workers for improving child immunization rates and institutional deliveries.

In response to recent data showing a maternal mortality ratio of 153 per lakh live births and an infant mortality rate of 30 per 1,000 live births, Chief Minister Majhi has ordered an urgent, mission-mode overhaul of the state’s healthcare and social sectors under the PRAYASS initiative. He directed the Health and Family Welfare Department to implement targeted campaigns to reduce maternal, infant, and neonatal deaths, specifically improving medical access in remote and rural areas. To combat childhood malnutrition, including stunting and wasting, officials have been instructed to strengthen the ‘Suposhita Odisha’ campaign and implement stricter quality surveillance on nutritional supplements distributed through Anganwadi centers.
