The Ogun State House of Assembly passed the ‘Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026’ to address maternal mortality and promote reproductive health rights. 

Following the passage of the bill, the Ogun State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) appealed to Governor Dapo Abiodun to reject the legislation. CAN Chairman, The Right Reverend Emmanuel Oludaisi Adekunle, argued that the law contradicts the “sanctity of human life” and may violate constitutional rights regarding life and freedom of conscience. The association also expressed concern that the bill could compel medical workers to act against their religious convictions and noted that religious leaders were not included in public hearings.
