On September 12, a family boating on Okanagan Lake near Vernon, British Columbia, rescued an exhausted bear cub found struggling in the water. Following guidance from the B.C. Conservation Officer Service, the family pulled the animal onto their boat to dry and then released it near the shoreline to avoid habituating it to humans.

Following the rescue, wildlife experts from the Northern Lights Wildlife Society raised concerns regarding the cub’s ability to survive the winter. Experts noted that the cub, estimated at 30 pounds, is below the typical 50-pound threshold required to sustain itself through hibernation. In response, the Northern Lights Wildlife Society has deployed a team to the Parker Cove area in an attempt to capture and shelter the animal.
