Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer continues to face scrutiny following a series of high turnover rates. While his season total reached ten turnovers following a 41-13 loss to Georgia, recent data shows Mateer has been responsible for nine of the Sooners’ 14 total turnovers this season, including seven interceptions.

Head coach Brent Venables previously noted that Mateer’s confidence appeared ‘bruised’ after the Georgia game. Offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle has since reaffirmed his support for Mateer, stating the quarterback remains the team’s best option to win despite recent inconsistencies. Arbuckle emphasized the need to eliminate ‘back-breaking errors’ and ‘catastrophic errors,’ while taking responsibility for play design and execution. He also noted that Mateer has faced challenges playing behind an injured offensive line, which contributed to a loss against Kentucky where Mateer threw three interceptions.

Despite the ongoing struggles, Mateer remains the starter. However, the performance and potential of backups continue to be a point of discussion. While Whitt Newbauer was previously highlighted as a potential solution to mitigate turnover issues, attention has also turned to Bowe Bentley, a highly regarded 2026 prospect whom Arbuckle described as ‘always learning’ and hyper-focused on the game.
