Olympique de Marseille has faced public criticism from former players regarding internal management and club performance.

Jean-Pierre Papin, a former striker and 1991 Ballon d'Or winner, detailed significant internal tensions during his tenure as coach of the club’s reserve team. Papin accused Ali Zarrak, the then-manager of the Pro 2 team, of undermining his authority. He claimed to have experienced “moral harassment for a year and a half” and stated that his attempts to alert president Pablo Longoria to these issues went unresolved. Papin described his departure from the club as a “catastrophe” resulting from mismanagement.

Additionally, former defender Jérémy Mathieu criticized the club’s leadership and on-field results. Mathieu stated, “Marseille is very poorly managed,” citing disappointment with the team’s recent performances, including a match against Troyes.
