The documentary film ‘Once Upon a Time in Harlem’ has premiered after a fifty-year delay. Originally filmed in August 1972 by William Greaves, the project was completed by his son, David Greaves, following the filmmaker’s death.

The film documents a 1972 gathering of Harlem Renaissance figures at the apartment of Duke Ellington. It features intellectuals and artists such as Eubie Blake, Richard Bruce Nugent, Louise Thompson Patterson, Romare Bearden, and Aaron Douglas. The footage captures participants reminiscing, debating the nature of the era, and offering varying perspectives, with some describing the period as an ‘awakening’ rather than a renaissance.

Following acclaim at the Sundance Film Festival, the documentary was screened at the Cannes, Telluride, Toronto, and New York Film Festivals. It is currently being released in theaters via NEON.
