Ontario is experiencing a decline in candidate numbers for local governance roles. In the education sector, the number of candidates for school trustee positions is expected to decrease because Education Minister Paul Calandra placed eight boards under provincial control due to financial mismanagement. This oversight has effectively suspended the role of elected trustees in boards including Toronto’s public and Catholic boards, the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, and the Peel District School Board.

Following the August 21 nomination deadline for the October 26 elections, the political landscape has become clearer. While Toronto’s mayoral race features a crowded field including incumbent Olivia Chow, Brad Bradford, and Chris Alexander, other regions show significant lack of competition. In Ottawa, the mayoral race includes eight candidates, such as incumbent Mark Sutcliffe and Jeff Leiper, but several city councillors, including Riley Brockington and Laine Johnson, are running unopposed.

Regional variations in competition are evident. In the Grey-Bruce area, many trustee positions for the Bluewater District School Board and the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board are expected to be acclaimed. Conversely, Norfolk County shows significant turnover as Mayor Amy Martin and long-time councillor Mike Columbus are not seeking re-election; however, the Norfolk mayoral race features seven candidates and no council acclamations.

York University professor Zachary Spicer has noted that a lack of competition in mayoral races can “negatively impact voter turnout,” a trend frequently observed in rural communities where seats may have no registered candidates or only a single challenger.
