In Toronto, community organizations have launched initiatives to combat voter apathy, following years of declining participation. Early data shows more than 222,000 people cast ballots at advance polls in Toronto, marking a decade-high engagement level. In Brampton, advance voter turnout has increased by an estimated eight per cent compared to the previous election, with nearly 25,000 residents participating. Despite these increases in advance voting across Brampton, Toronto, and Mississauga, officials continue to express concerns regarding overall turnout, noting that Ontario saw historic lows in the 2022 municipal elections. Discussions surrounding the election also highlight systemic challenges, including the gap between municipal council representation and constituent diversity, barriers for immigrant and visible minority candidates, the influence of campaign fundraising, and a shrinking local media environment. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-21: Brampton reports increased advance voter turnout for 2026 election Brampton reports an eight per cent increase in advance voter turnout for the 2026 municipal election, amid broader discussions on political representation and historic low turnout in Ontario. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/brampton-reports-increased-advance-voter-turnout-for-2026-election ### 2026-10-19: Toronto community groups launch initiatives to combat voter apathy Toronto community organizations are hosting civic engagement events to combat declining voter turnout ahead of the October 26 municipal election. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/toronto-community-groups-launch-initiatives-to-combat-voter-apathy --- Cite as: Ontario municipal election voter engagement.
