The Melbourne Recital Centre has launched the Peter and Ruth McMullin Beacon, a new intimate live music and events venue situated on the building’s top level. Developed from a former storage space, the $2 million project was funded by a $1 million investment from the Victorian government and a matching $1 million philanthropic donation from Ruth and Peter McMullin AM.

Industry leaders view the opening of the venue as a way to support the performing arts sector, which is currently facing challenges such as rising production costs, funding cuts, and the closure of other small music venues in the city. The space is intended to provide opportunities for jazz, cabaret, contemporary music, and First Nations-led performances.

The venue’s inaugural program is scheduled to begin on 17 September, featuring international cabaret artist Meow Meow.
