A recent birth of a Sumatran orangutan infant to a mother named Wenda was noted as a “symbol of renewed hope for preserving Indonesia’s irreplaceable forest ecosystems.” In contrast, the Tapanuli orangutan remains critically endangered with an estimated population of approximately 716 individuals.
