Austrian public transport operator ÖBB Postbus has partnered with Otokar to pilot the e-Centro, a fully electric SAE Level 4 autonomous bus. The pilot program is scheduled to run from August 24 to September 4, 2026, during the European Forum Alpbach.

While the vehicle is capable of autonomous driving within defined areas, current Austrian legislation requires a trained safety driver to remain on board during the testing phase. The 6.6-meter bus has a 32-passenger capacity and utilizes a 110 kWh battery to provide a range of approximately 200 km. It is equipped with lidar, cameras, and GNSS for obstacle avoidance and navigation.

Following the initial pilot, the bus is intended for regular scheduled services at the Wolfurt Campus to connect the industrial park with the S-Bahn rail network. Austrian Minister Peter Hanke stated that autonomous vehicles offer a significant opportunity to enhance transport efficiency and maintain the country’s status as an innovation hub.
