Tensions escalated between the Ottoman Empire and the Republic of Venice following the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople and the subsequent targeting of Cyprus. The siege of Famagusta, which included the death of Venetian commander Marcantonio Bragadin, served as a catalyst for conflict. This period was marked by local alarm in Italian regions like Rimini due to Ottoman naval presence.

In response to Ottoman expansion, a coalition known as the Holy League—comprising Spain, the Papal States, Venice, Genoa, and Malta—was formed. On October 7, 1571, this coalition engaged the Ottoman fleet in the Gulf of Patras near Greece.

Led by Don Juan of Austria, the Holy League secured a decisive victory over the Ottoman forces led by Grand Admiral Ali Pasha. The battle resulted in the death of Ali Pasha and the destruction of approximately half of the Ottoman fleet. This engagement, noted as the last major naval battle primarily involving galleys, effectively halted Ottoman naval dominance in the eastern Mediterranean.

During the crisis, Pope St. Pius V emphasized the religious significance of the conflict, calling upon the Catholic faithful to pray the Rosary to counter the threat to Christendom. This spiritual response coincided with his previous efforts to support the defense of the region, including providing financial aid for the fortifications of Malta.
