Pakistan is actively pursuing foreign investment and international cooperation to develop its energy and mining sectors, with a specific focus on critical minerals.

Initially, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik engaged with executives from US-based Morgan Hughes Energy, Tejara Capital, and Vitol Asia. These discussions centered on critical mineral exploration in Balochistan, such as the Reko Diq copper-gold deposit, as well as increasing oil and gas production and expanding fuel-storage capacity at the Gwadar port.

Following these efforts, US officials, including Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker and Peshawar Consul General Tom Eckert, met with parliamentary leaders in Islamabad to discuss strengthening cooperation regarding energy, security, and critical minerals. The discussions highlighted the importance of these minerals for clean energy technologies and noted that mineral rights in Pakistan are managed at the provincial level. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial government has allocated Rs240 million to mining in its 2026-27 development budget.
