Provincial governments in Pakistan have initiated programs to distribute electric bikes to facilitate easier transportation for students and workers.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial cabinet approved an electric bike scheme specifically targeting female college and university students as well as employed women. Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi noted the program would use a merit-based system and is part of a broader strategy to promote electric vehicles, with future plans for electric rickshaws and buses.

In Punjab, the ‘CM Maryam Nawaz E-Bike Scheme’ has moved into an active application phase. The initiative aims to provide 100,000 subsidized electric bikes to students enrolled in over 33,000 government and private educational institutions. Under this subsidy, the cost of a bike is reduced from PKR 199,000 to PKR 109,000, with a 36-month installment plan of approximately PKR 3,028 per month. The government also covers insurance, registration, and mark-up costs. 

Phase II of the e-Bike Scheme has seen high engagement, recording over 432,000 student registrations within its first two days, with more than 108,000 applications fully submitted. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years old, hold a Punjab domicile, and be enrolled in recognized higher education institutions; the program also offers waived down payments and free training.

Expanding beyond individual mobility, the Punjab government plans to launch electric bus services across 91 tehsils starting in January 2027. The province aims to deploy 1,500 buses in the initial phase, targeting a total of 3,000 operational buses by June 2027, supported by dedicated electric bus depots in each tehsil.
