In late August 2026, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. During the summit, Sharif held bilateral discussions with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to strengthen bilateral ties and advance the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as a means toward regional peace.

Following the summit, Sharif met in Islamabad with the newly elected Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani. Sharif pledged the federal government’s full cooperation regarding the welfare of the AJK population and discussed regional development and peace.
