Following a 30-year wait, the Minas Gerais State Government and the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG) have initiated a restoration project for the Oscar Niemeyer-designed cultural complex. The initial phase involves an investment of approximately R$ 10 million provided by the MPMG through the Semente Platform. This stage focuses on the Grande Teatro Cemig, the complex’s primary performance space. Planned improvements include modernizing infrastructure, enhancing accessibility and security, and preserving architectural features through works such as replacing seats, restoring stage and auditorium floors, and renewing electrical systems. The renovation is expected to last between five and seven months and is part of a broader strategy to restore and requalify the entire cultural hub. Alongside these structural developments, the venue has also hosted the premiere of the opera ‘Chica da Silva’, featuring the Minas Gerais Symphony Orchestra and the Minas Gerais Lyric Choir. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-09: Minas Gerais announces major renovation of Palácio das Artes The Government of Minas Gerais is launching a R$ 10 million renovation of the Palácio das Artes, starting with the Grande Teatro Cemig, to modernize infrastructure and preserve its architectural heritage. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/minas-gerais-announces-major-renovation-of-palcio-das-artes ### 2026-09-30: Palácio das Artes in Belo Horizonte announces restoration and new opera Belo Horizonte's Palácio das Artes is launching a R$ 10 million restoration project and premiering a new opera, ‘Chica da Silva’, which offers a nuanced historical perspective of the titular character. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/palcio-das-artes-in-belo-horizonte-announces-restoration-and-new-opera --- Cite as: Palácio das Artes restoration and cultural developments.
