Political activity in Palermo has intensified as various groups prepare for the 2027 local elections. The center-right coalition launched the ‘Palermo Capitale’ initiative, led by Fratelli d’Italia deputy Carolina Varchi, which utilizes technical tables to address sectors such as economic development, security, and urban regeneration. Current Mayor Roberto Lagalla has indicated his intention to seek a second term.

In a separate development, the ‘Palermo Futura – Capitale del Mediterraneo’ movement was introduced by Totò Lentini and Felice Coppolino. This civic project seeks to move beyond traditional center-right and center-left divisions, focusing on financial recovery, technological innovation, and urban revitalization to restore the city’s Mediterranean influence.

Recent developments have further defined these political paths. Under the ‘Palermo Capitale’ initiative, technical tables have been established at Villa Filippina to address eight specific areas, including tourism, mobility, culture, and legality. During the launch, Varchi stated, “I do not cultivate personal ambitions but political projects.”

Additionally, Cateno De Luca, leader of the Sud Chiama Nord movement, has presented a ten-point program for ‘Palermo Futura – Capitale del Mediterraneo.’ This program emphasizes the training of a new leadership class and the formation of an agreement with the ‘Sindaci d’Italia’ movement. De Luca also indicated he is entering a transitional phase in his political career, noting that his ultimate destination remains uncertain.
