Sources: 10. Developments: 2. Panathinaikos has extended the contract of Giorgos Papalexiou through the 2027-2028 season. This decision follows a severe knee injury, specifically an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear, sustained during a friendly match against Foinikas Syros. The injury is expected to sideline Papalexiou for the entire upcoming season. The club described the renewal as an “act of recognition for his contributions and character,” particularly noting his role in the team’s recent double championship win. In announcing the extension, the club emphasized its commitment to its values by standing by athletes during difficult times, citing previous instances of support for players such as Fayi Kotoula and Anna Niki Stamolamprou. The injury may influence the club’s transfer strategy as they potentially look to recruit another Greek player to support their existing rotation. Recent reports indicate the club may seek a Greek central midfielder to join Gasman, Voulkidis, and Kolef, while also noting the need to find a replacement for the center position. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-26: Panathinaikos extends Papalexiou's contract following ACL injury Panathinaikos extended Giorgos Papalexiou's contract until 2028 following a serious ACL injury.
