In mid-August 2026, violent clashes occurred in Waena, Jayapura, as thousands of students and youth members protested military deployment in Papua and commemorated the 1962 New York Agreement. Organized by the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) and student alliances, the demonstrations escalated when security forces blocked a long march toward Abepura.

Police utilized tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowds, resulting in injuries to both protesters and seven police officers. Activists noted that the increased military presence and land exploitation pose threats to the rights and sovereignty of indigenous Papuans.
