During the Torneo Clausura, Nacional and Cerro Porteño have been key participants in the Paraguayan football season.

In early September, Nacional striker Hugo Iván Valdez expressed expectations for a closely contested match against Cerro Porteño. Valdez noted that Cerro Porteño’s coaching staff had implemented a five-defender tactical scheme to prioritize defensive solidity. At that time, Nacional was on a winning streak, having secured three consecutive victories without conceding a goal.

By late September, Cerro Porteño reported increased roster stability and the return of key players. Goalkeeper Manuel Roffo, defenders Jorge Morel and Iván Ramírez, and forward Pablo Vegetti were noted for providing continuity. Roffo has demonstrated high effectiveness in recent matches, while Vegetti remains a primary offensive reference with five goals. Attacker Juan Manuel Iturbe returned from injury, providing more options for coach Gustavo Costas, though he was expected to start on the bench to regain rhythm. Other players sidelined during this period included Roberto Junior Fernández and Cecilio Domínguez.

By late September 2026, the squad received further boosts with the availability of Blas Riveros following recent physical discomfort. Additionally, defender Alexis Cañete received his first call-up to the Paraguay national team for friendly matches against Bolivia and Colombia, an opportunity he described as fulfilling a “lifelong dream.” As the tournament progresses to its 12th round, Cerro Porteño prepares to face Sportivo Trinidense, seeking a victory to maintain pressure on league leaders Libertad and Olimpia.
