Research into Parkinson’s disease has increasingly focused on the potential neuroprotective benefits of physical activity. Initial studies from Thomas Jefferson University using murine models indicated that intensive exercise might prevent the degeneration of dopaminergic terminals and improve motor performance by interacting with dopamine and endocannabinoid receptors, which helps preserve synaptic plasticity.

Subsequent longitudinal research published in the journal Neurology expanded on these findings by monitoring 294 human participants with mild to moderate Parkinson’s disease over seven years. This study, involving scientists from the University of Cincinnati and the Catholic University of Korea, categorized participants by weekly activity levels. Findings indicated that the most active group—those engaging in more than eight hours of activity per week—experienced a slower progression of motor symptoms, such as tremors, rigidity, and slowness of movement, as well as a slower decline in memory and other cognitive abilities. While the correlation is significant, researchers noted the study does not prove that physical activity directly causes slower disease progression.

## Timeline

### 2026-10-23: Physical activity linked to slower Parkinson's progression

A seven-year study suggests that patients with Parkinson's disease who engage in more than eight hours of weekly physical activity may experience slower cognitive and motor symptom decline.

### 2026-10-08: Physical activity linked to slower Parkinson's progression

A study in the journal Neurology finds that higher physical activity levels correlate with slower cognitive and motor symptom decline in patients with Parkinson's disease.

### 2026-09-29: Parkinson’s disease symptoms and neuroprotective exercise research

Parkinson’s disease symptoms include tremors, stiffness, and slow movement, while new research suggests voluntary exercise may provide neuroprotection by regulating dopamine and endocannabinoid systems.
