In July 2026 Poland marked the loss of two of its last World War II Home Army (Armia Krajowa) veterans. Lieutenant Edward Ciupak, a former AK fighter, died at age 97 on 5 July. A few weeks later, on 29 July, Kazimierz Czaplo – known by the nom de guerre “Irys” – died at 99, becoming the final surviving partisan from the Podlasie region. Czaplo’s funeral in Białystok featured a military honor guard, attendance by senior officers, and was described as both a personal farewell and a symbolic tribute to the generation that resisted Nazi occupation and later Soviet oppression.
