Tuscany regional officials have moved toward authorizing a new oxy-combustor waste management plant in Peccioli. Initially, Tuscany Region President Eugenio Giani signaled support for the project following a positive environmental impact assessment. The proposed 130 million euro facility, managed by the public company Belvedere, aims to improve local waste management and potentially prevent rising disposal fees by reducing the need to transport waste to other regions.

Following the assessment, the Tuscany regional government officially approved the plant’s environmental compatibility. Governor Giani described the decision as a ‘historic result’ that would transition waste management from landfills to a system capable of molecular decomposition and energy production.

The approval has triggered political friction. While regional environmental assessor David Barontini of the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) voted in favor, he characterized the vote as a ‘taking note’ of a long administrative process rather than a shift in vision. In response, Elena Meini of the Lega Toscana criticized the M5S, labeling the vote a ‘political betrayal’ and calling for more sustainable waste management policies to protect the costs for families and businesses.
