Penn State athletics has focused on roster construction and identity through strategic transfers and training camp developments.

In July, the basketball program added Pennsylvania native Brant Byers to the roster, while football coach Matt Campbell implemented a strategy to balance heavy use of the transfer portal with a focus on player retention.

By August, the football team’s training camp emphasized a more physical defensive identity. Under the influence of new defensive line coach Ikaika Malloe and a focus on Big Ten physicality, the program utilized the transfer portal to acquire large interior defensive linemen weighing over 315 pounds, including Siale Taupaki and Keanu Williams—both former players under Malloe and defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn at UCLA—as well as Oklahoma State transfer Armstrong Nnodim.

On offense, the team has maintained a run-heavy identity. Running back Quinton Martin Jr. has demonstrated versatility in rushing and receiving, while quarterback Alex Manske and freshman receiver Amarion Jackson have emerged as notable performers in practice.

To address previous inconsistent performances against top-tier opponents, Coach Campbell has introduced a new culture of discipline and internal competition. This includes a points-based system where players earn or lose standing based on performance, punctuality, and community service.

As training camp progresses, the football team is preparing for its first scrimmage at Beaver Stadium. Head coach Matt Campbell noted the scrimmage will provide “critical live reps to evaluate team formations and player positioning,” particularly as the program integrates new players. Regarding health, Campbell reported no major long-term injuries. Safety Jeremiah Cooper is nearing a full return from an ACL tear, and defensive tackle Armstrong Nnodim has returned to practice looking healthy. Associate head coach Terry Smith emphasized the need for “execution without mental errors” during the scrimmage.
