The Peruvian Navy has undertaken several initiatives to enhance its maritime capabilities through the SIMA Perú shipyard in Callao.

In early August 2026, the navy commissioned the BAP Talara, a 58.9-metre auxiliary logistic vessel. Built with technology transfer from Hyundai Heavy Industries, the ship is designed to support the “Expansion of maritime logistic supply capacity on the Peruvian coast” project. It is intended to facilitate the rapid transport of humanitarian aid and heavy equipment, particularly to respond to the El Niño phenomenon.

By mid-August 2026, the navy completed a major modernization of the BAP Antofagasta, a German-origin Type 209/1200 submarine. Conducted in collaboration with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, the upgrades included hull modifications, the installation of the locally developed Kalpa combat management system, and the ability to launch SM39 Exocet anti-ship missiles. These improvements are expected to extend the vessel’s operational life by 15 to 20 years.
