Research from the EU-approved SPRINT project has identified pesticide exposure in residents of southeastern Buenos Aires province, Argentina. Agronomist Virginia Aparicio reported finding various pesticides in the blood of rural producers, town inhabitants, and urban professionals in cities such as Mar del Plata and Tandil. Aparicio noted that Argentina utilizes five times more chemicals per hectare than Europe and alleged she was removed from her state position following these disclosures.

Subsequent reports detailed findings presented to the Balcarce Deliberative Council, showing pesticide mixtures in soil, water, domestic dust, and biological samples like urine. Water surveys indicated that 18% of rural well samples and 9% of network water samples in the province exceeded European reference thresholds.

In response, retired researcher José Luis Costa has called for the application of the precautionary principle under Argentina’s General Environmental Law, arguing that a lack of scientific certainty should not prevent action when serious damage is possible. Costa noted that current domestic regulations fail to account for many pesticides presently in use and urged local authorities to increase water monitoring.
