In Argentina, an 11-year-old dog named Zoe was left at the El Campito shelter in Monte Grande. The owner, a retired man on minimum welfare benefits, provided food and a letter explaining that a new landlord’s pet policy forced him to surrender the animal. The shelter expressed a desire to support the owner rather than judge him. Other cases underscore the severity of abandonment. In one instance, an elderly poodle named Lucky was found in a cardboard box near a trash bin. Despite receiving medical treatment for dehydration and skin disease, the dog died after seven days. In Uberlândia, Brazil, a Shih Tzu puppy named Jasmin was rescued from a landfill where she was being attacked by vultures. Rescuers from Amparo Pet Uberlândia suspected she had been discarded by an illegal breeding facility. After being treated for various health issues, the puppy was successfully rehabilitated and adopted. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-28: Animal rescue stories highlight issues of pet abandonment Reports detail the rescue of an elderly poodle that succumbed to injuries after abandonment, and a Shih Tzu puppy in Brazil that survived a vulture attack to find a new home. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/animal-rescue-stories-highlight-issues-of-pet-abandonment ### 2026-10-03: Argentina animal shelter finds dog left with heartfelt letter An elderly man in Argentina surrendered his 11-year-old dog, Zoe, to an animal shelter after his landlord prohibited pets, leaving a heartbreaking letter explaining his financial and housing struggles. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/argentina-animal-shelter-finds-dog-left-with-heartfelt-letter --- Cite as: Pet abandonment and animal rescue cases.
