Research led by Universitätsmedizin Halle and an international team suggests that FDG-PET scans may serve as a reliable alternative to invasive bone marrow biopsies for detecting the spread of rhabdomyosarcoma. 

Rhabdomyosarcoma is a malignant soft tissue tumor that accounts for approximately 60 percent of all soft tissue tumors in children and adolescents. While bone marrow aspiration is the current gold standard for detecting spread, it is an invasive, painful procedure that may miss unevenly distributed cancer cells. 

An analysis of data from over 300 patients indicates that PET scans can visualize tumor involvement in the bone marrow with a level of reliability similar to traditional methods. This development could potentially spare pediatric patients from highly distressing tissue sampling procedures.
