Developments: 2. Filmmaker Peter Jackson has provided updates regarding several upcoming film projects. He confirmed that a sequel to ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ has a completed script and will be his next feature film to direct, fulfilling a long-standing agreement with Steven Spielberg. Regarding the Middle-earth franchise, Jackson reported during the Sitges Film Festival that ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’, directed by Andy Serkis, is nearing the end of principal photography in New Zealand. With approximately two weeks of filming remaining, the project features returning actors such as Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood and is scheduled for release on December 17, 2027. Additionally, a new sequel titled ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Shadow of the Past’ is in the screenwriting stage. The project is being written by Peter Jackson, Stephen Colbert, and Philippa Boyens. Set 14 years after the events of ‘The Return of the King’, the film may adapt book elements omitted from the original trilogy, such as the character Tom Bombadil and the Old Forest. Despite recent corporate shifts at Warner Bros., including the Paramount-Skydance takeover and the departure of executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, Jackson’s comments indicate that development for both Middle-earth projects is actively moving forward. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-21: Peter Jackson updates status of upcoming Lord of the Rings films Peter Jackson confirmed that “The Hunt for Gollum” is nearing the end of filming, while “Shadow of the Past” remains in the scriptwriting stage, despite recent rumors of studio-driven cancellations. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/peter-jackson-confirms-new-lord-of-the-rings-sequel-in-development ### 2026-10-18: Peter Jackson announces Tintin sequel and Lord of the Rings updates Peter Jackson confirmed that a sequel to ‘The Adventures of Tintin’ will be his next directorial project and provided production updates on two new ‘Lord of the Rings’ films. 13 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/peter-jackson-updates-status-of-middle-earth-films-and-tintin-sequel --- Cite as: Peter Jackson film project updates.
