During Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day, Obi attributed the nation’s economic and security crises to leadership failure, noting that the government has failed to translate national wealth into security or prosperity. He highlighted severe socio-economic challenges, including widespread poverty affecting over 140 million people, high rates of youth unemployment, and significant educational crises. Obi also expressed concern over escalating food insecurity, terrorism, and banditry. Following these remarks, he criticized the Federal Government’s 30-day petrol discount policy, describing it as a “reactive and confused approach to governance” that prioritizes political optics over systemic economic reform. Additionally, Obi criticized the 2023 removal of the petrol subsidy and subsequent reforms, such as the floating of the naira, arguing they were implemented in a disorganized manner without adequate assessment of their impact on the population. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-10: Nigeria: Peter Obi criticizes temporary fuel discount policy Peter Obi has criticized Nigeria's 30-day petrol discount as a reactive policy that prioritizes political optics over addressing deep-seated economic challenges like poverty and unemployment. 8 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/nigeria-peter-obi-criticizes-temporary-fuel-discount-policy ### 2026-10-01: Peter Obi blames leadership failure for Nigeria's economic and security crises NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi criticized Nigeria's leadership during Independence Day, citing extreme poverty, high youth unemployment, and widespread food insecurity. 4 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/peter-obi-blames-leadership-failure-for-nigerias-economic-and-security-crises --- Cite as: Peter Obi criticism of Nigerian governance.
