On August 4, 2026, a massive ice island covering approximately 76 square kilometers broke off from the Petermann Glacier off the coast of northwest Greenland. The detached ice block is estimated to be up to 150 meters thick and is roughly the size of Manhattan.

Satellite data from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 mission documented significant weakening and deterioration along the centerline of the glacier’s floating ice tongue immediately preceding the detachment. This event is noted as the largest loss of floating ice from the Petermann Glacier since 2012 and one of the most significant Arctic calving events recorded since 2020.

International researchers, including teams from the University of Ottawa, the Canadian Ice Service, the University of Stirling, and various UK universities, have been monitoring the glacier since 2019. Scientists stated that while the break was “remarkable,” the instability had been anticipated for years due to the gradual growth of fractures.

Following the detachment, NASA and other researchers observed the iceberg drifting through the Petermann Fjord toward the Nares Strait at speeds of approximately three kilometers per day. In late August, the iceberg collided with the small Joe Island. Researchers noted that the iceberg remained “largely intact” despite the collision, an outcome that surprised the scientific community.

Scientists continue to monitor the mass to determine if the impact with the island causes subsequent cracking or splitting. The long-term stability of the iceberg remains uncertain due to the effects of wind, tides, currents, and meltwater. Experts warn that two additional large ice blocks—estimated at 94 and 84 square kilometers—remain unstable and could potentially detach.
