President Iliana Yotova described the event as ‘one of the bleedingest wounds of us as a society’, calling for a reckoning regarding truth and societal indifference. Sofia municipal councilor Vanya Grigorova has criticized the incident as a symbol of the ‘breakdown of statehood’, alleging that non-governmental organizations are replacing state institutions. Grigorova raised questions regarding Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev’s connections to individuals associated with Ivaylo Kalushev and noted previous investigations into contacts between Terziev and Border Police leadership. While recent findings from the Prosecutor's Office and the Ministry of Interior indicate no evidence of external interference in the fatalities, the case remains a point of contention regarding institutional oversight and the presence of children being raised by adults without parental ties within the group. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-20: Vanya Grigorova criticizes statehood breakdown in Petrohan case Sofia councilor Vanya Grigorova claims the Petrohan case symbolizes a breakdown in statehood, criticizing the influence of NGOs and Mayor Vasil Terziev’s ties to the group surrounding Ivaylo Kalushev. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/vanya-grigorova-criticizes-statehood-breakdown-in-petrohan-case ### 2026-09-19: Iliyana Yotova addresses Petrohan incident and journalism ethics Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova reflected on her journalism roots and criticized the ‘Petrohan’ incident as a deep societal wound, calling for truth and accountability. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/iliyana-yotova-addresses-petrohan-incident-and-journalism-ethics --- Cite as: Petrohan incident political and social fallout.
