Research has identified the presence of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’, in various consumer paper products.

Initial findings regarding toilet paper indicated that while certain brands contain PFAS, phthalates, and other compounds, medical experts suggest exposure levels are currently minimal compared to other sources like food packaging. Oncologists and dermatologists noted that while skin in certain areas is highly absorbent, the quantities found in these products are not yet clearly linked to cancer, though switching to unbleached or fragrance-free options may resolve skin irritations.

Subsequent research by the University of Antwerp expanded on these concerns by testing drinking straws. The study found that 90 percent of paper straw brands tested contained PFAS, used as waterproof coatings to prevent the paper from dissolving. Bamboo straws also showed high prevalence at 80 percent, while plastic and glass showed lower rates, and stainless steel contained none. Scientists expressed concern regarding the ability of these chemicals to accumulate in the environment and the human body.
