Authorities in Poland are addressing various forms of pharmaceutical crime, ranging from large-scale illegal exports to localized prescription fraud.

In one major enforcement action, between 100 and 110 pharmacies had their operating licenses revoked following investigations into the illegal trade and export of medicines. Chief Pharmaceutical Inspector Łukasz Pietrzak noted that illicit exports, valued at up to 2 billion PLN annually, were most intense between 2015 and 2019. These activities utilized an “inverted distribution chain” to smuggle essential cardiovascular, anticoagulant, and hormonal treatments abroad, causing significant domestic shortages. Investigators faced difficulties due to the destruction of evidence through fires, thefts, and intentional water damage.

More recently, the Silesian Voivodeship Pharmaceutical Inspectorate has warned of fraudulent e-prescriptions targeting high-strength narcotics like OxyContin. Reported incidents include the use of forged e-prescriptions involving stolen physician identities and the unauthorized issuance of SMS codes for narcotic medications. Police have been notified of these identity and data misuse cases.
