Sources: 21. Developments: 4. Following the conclusion of the MLB season, the Philadelphia Phillies moved to finalize their managerial staff. Initial reports indicated that the team expected to name Don Mattingly as their full-time manager for the 2027 campaign after Alex Cora declined the position. Mattingly, who had previously served as an interim manager after the dismissal of Rob Thomson, officially signed a two-year contract. President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski announced the deal, which secures Mattingly as the permanent manager for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. This decision follows a period where Mattingly, the former bench coach, led the team to a 79-55 record and a National League wild-card spot after a difficult 9-19 start. Despite the successful turnaround, the team was eliminated in the NL Wild Card Series by the Atlanta Braves. In the process of selecting a permanent leader, the organization reportedly made several unsuccessful attempts to secure other candidates. Beyond Alex Cora, who declined the position on two separate occasions, President Dombrowski reportedly reached out to former players Chase Utley and Raul Ibanez to gauge their interest, but both declined. Upon signing, Mattingly reflected on his transition from bench coach to interim leader, stating, “Last year really wasn’t my team. It was Thomps’ team. I took over from that point and just kind of just drove the car from there.” He expressed an intention to implement his own vision for the roster during the upcoming offseasons. As part of the transition under Mattingly, the Phillies have also made changes to the coaching staff. The team hired Peter Fatse as the new hitting coach to replace Kevin Long, who was recently dismissed. This move is intended to address offensive inconsistencies, such as high strikeout rates, within a lineup that includes Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber. ## Claims - Mattingly recorded a 79-55 record after replacing Rob Thomson in late April 2026.
