Following a 2026 season that saw the Philadelphia Phillies secure a National League Wild Card berth but suffer an early postseason elimination by the Atlanta Braves, the organization is entering a period of significant evaluation. Despite a strong starting rotation featuring Jesus Luzardo, the team has struggled to advance in the playoffs for three consecutive years.

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is expected to lead efforts to address a struggling farm system and a bullpen that recorded the worst ERA among playoff teams. A primary focus is rebuilding the relief corps, particularly as left-hander José Alvarado approaches free agency after a 5.86 ERA. To stabilize the dugout, the team has already secured manager Don Mattingly with a two-year contract.

As the offseason progresses, the front office must manage a massive payroll and navigate decisions regarding players under team control for 2027. This includes arbitration-eligible players such as All-Star closer Jhoan Duran, who is in his final year of arbitration, and Tanner Banks. The team is also monitoring the development of young talent like center fielder Justin Crawford, whose growth is considered vital for long-term payroll management. Other players under consideration include pre-arbitration assets Jonathan Bowlan and Alex McFarlane.
