Following a 2026 National League Wild Card Series elimination by the Atlanta Braves, the Philadelphia Phillies are navigating significant roster and leadership transitions. The organization has been seeking a new manager, with Alex Cora identified as a frontrunner to replace interim manager Don Mattingly.

Shortstop Trea Turner is facing intense scrutiny regarding his performance. After a season in which he hit .242 and committed a league-worst 21 errors, President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski stated that defensive improvement is “mandatory” if Turner wishes to remain at the position for the 2027 season. Turner, who has seven years remaining on a $300 million contract, met with Dombrowski to discuss his future. While the team intends to keep him at shortstop to start 2027, a move to second base remains a possibility if his form does not improve by spring training.

To address these issues, the Phillies have appointed former Mets manager Carlos Mendoza as the new infield coach and infield coordinator. Turner is expected to work with Mendoza during the offseason. Internal options for the shortstop position include prospects Aidan Miller and Bryan Rincon, though the team may also seek a replacement via trade.

Other roster movements include the potential departure of free agent Alec Bohm, potentially leaving a vacancy at third base for Aidan Miller. Mid-season acquisition Luis Arraez has drawn interest from the Detroit Tigers, with reports suggesting a potential two-year, $24 million contract. Additionally, pitcher José Urquidy is set to become a free agent, though the team has re-signed left-handed reliever Tim Mayza. Amidst these changes, Bryce Harper was named the team’s 2026 MVP.
