Vietnam’s Sun Group first disclosed the design of the country’s inaugural light‑rail transit line on Phu Quoc island, outlining an 18‑km route with six culturally themed stations and an estimated VND 9 trillion investment. Within weeks, construction had already begun (December 2025) and, by August 2026, pile foundations were completed while tunnel and station works progressed. 

As of mid-August 2026, the project has entered a critical phase with the commencement of a tender for the supply, construction, and installation of the rail system. This tender involves a consortium including Vietnam Railways (VNR) and China Railway Construction Corporation 16 Group (CRCC16). The 17.59 km double-track line will utilize 1435mm gauge rails across its mix of at‑grade, elevated, and underground sections.

To ensure readiness for the APEC 2027 summit, the project aims for completion by February 2027, though previous estimates targeted the second quarter of 2027. The line will link Phu Quoc International Airport to the APEC 2027 conference hub, reducing travel time to approximately 18–20 minutes. Currently, the site employs approximately 320 workers and 30 engineers to manage the accelerated timeline.
