The Pierburg plant in Livorno, Italy, is facing industrial uncertainty following Rheinmetall’s announcement to sell its civil Power Systems division to the German investment fund Aequita for 350 million euros. Local officials and labor unions, including CGIL and Fiom, have expressed concern over the lack of production and employment safeguards in the sale. While German sites of the Rheinmetall group reportedly secured binding agreements, workers in Livorno have lacked similar guarantees, leading to three years of reliance on social safety nets that affect approximately 220 families. In response, workers have voted for a ten-hour strike. The Livorno municipal administration has called upon the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy to act as a guarantor and bring executives from Rheinmetall and Aequita to the negotiating table. Union representatives are urging the Italian government to use major defense contracts, such as the Rheinmetall-Leonardo tank joint venture, as leverage to secure industrial stability and workload plans for the local facility. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-28: Italy: Regional concerns over car tax and industrial labor disputes Italy faces diverse regional challenges, including uncertainty over car tax abolition funding, industrial strikes at Pierburg in Livorno, and new green hydrogen initiatives in the Port of Savona. 6 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/pierburg-workers-in-livorno-vote-for-strike-amid-industrial-uncertainty ### 2026-09-16: Livorno officials seek government mediation in Pierburg dispute Livorno officials are urging the Italian government to mediate between Rheinmetall and Aequita following the sale of the Power Systems division to secure job guarantees at the Pierburg plant. 3 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/livorno-officials-seek-government-mediation-in-pierburg-dispute --- Cite as: Pierburg plant industrial dispute in Livorno.
