The Plovdiv Municipality has initiated an international architectural competition titled ‘Liminal’ to redesign the Trimontium underpass. The project seeks to transform the area from a transit point into a cultural hub and entrance to the city’s forum complex.

Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov stated the initiative follows other urban developments, such as the Archaeological underpass, to expand pedestrian zones. Deputy Mayor Plamen Panov noted a new policy to open underpasses to creative industries. Design requirements prioritize accessibility, landscape solutions, and the integration of archaeological structures. Due to the site’s location within the historical ‘Philippopolis-Trimontium-Plovdiv’ zone, all plans require coordination with the National Institute of Immovable Cultural Heritage. Mandatory features include a tourist center and 24-hour accessible restrooms.
