PNV President Aitor Esteban stated during the Alderdi Eguna celebration that the party aims to build strong representation to defend the Basque Country against potential state-level abuses and to maintain its model of self-governance. During the 50th Alderdi Eguna celebration in Foronda, Esteban announced that the internal selection process for candidates would officially begin on October 19. He framed these upcoming contests as a single electoral cycle and a ‘first line of defense’ for Basque interests. Furthermore, Esteban issued a warning to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, stating that if the government fails to present the State Budgets, the PNV will demand the end of the current legislature and the calling of general elections. Regarding local leadership, the party has named Jon Urresti, president of Fundación Vital, as its candidate for the Mayoralty of Gasteiz for the May 2027 municipal elections. Urresti, a 59-year-old political science and sociology graduate who has not previously held public office, replaces Beatriz Artolazabal, who is seeking election to the Senate. ## Timeline ### 2026-09-27: Jon Urresti named PNV candidate for Gasteiz Mayoralty PNV has named Jon Urresti as its candidate for the Gasteiz Mayoralty in 2027, while Odile Susperregui Cornu has secured re-election as mayor of Biriatu following repeat municipal votes. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/basque-cultural-initiatives-foster-palestinian-solidarity-and-local-bertsolari-results ### 2026-09-27: PNV leader Aitor Esteban warns of general elections if budgets fail PNV leader Aitor Esteban has announced internal candidate selection processes for upcoming elections and warned that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez must present the State Budgets or face calls for general चुनावों 7 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/pnv-begins-candidate-selection-process-for-upcoming-basque-elections --- Cite as: PNV electoral candidate selection process.
