The EU-funded Pods4Rail project, involving the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Siemens Mobility, and 15 partners across Europe, has developed a modular mobility concept known as ‘supermodality’. 

The system is designed to allow passengers and cargo to transition seamlessly between road, rail, and cable car transport without leaving a standardized transport capsule. These capsules are transferred between different carrier units that provide the necessary chassis, propulsion, and energy supply for each specific mode of transport. 

Research has focused on technical implementation, including lightweight vehicle structures, automated locking and transfer systems, energy requirements, and communication between vehicles and infrastructure. The project aims to provide door-to-door transport solutions for both logistics companies and commuters, utilizing rail as a high-capacity, energy-efficient backbone.

Recent developments highlight the project’s focus on automation and autonomy. The initiative, which has received nearly three million euros in EU funding, aims to revolutionize European transport by using autonomous capsules that can be automatically transferred at specific nodes. This capability is intended to facilitate seamless travel from rural areas to mountain destinations by integrating road vehicles, trains, and cable cars.
