The U.S. National Park Service initiated a volunteer program at the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse in California, offering free accommodation in the 150-year-old landmark in exchange for 30 hours of weekly work. The residency, scheduled from November 6, 2026, to February 1, 2027, involves duties such as welcoming visitors, conducting educational presentations on local wildlife and history, and assisting with site operations. Following the initial call for volunteers, the program experienced high interest, resulting in the early closure of applications. Participants are expected to manage challenging winter coastal conditions, including high winds, dense fog, and low temperatures, while working at the site which has functioned as a museum since its maritime operations were automated in 1975. ## Timeline ### 2026-10-04: Point Reyes Lighthouse volunteer offer draws massive response The U.S. National Park Service received a massive response to a volunteer offer providing rent-free living at the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse in California. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/point-reyes-lighthouse-volunteer-offer-draws-massive-response ### 2026-09-25: Point Reyes Lighthouse offers free housing for volunteers The National Park Service offered free housing at California's historic Point Reyes Lighthouse for volunteers working 30 hours a week as museum guides and educators. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/point-reyes-lighthouse-offers-free-housing-for-volunteers-1 ### 2026-09-12: Point Reyes Lighthouse offers free housing for volunteers The U.S. National Park Service is offering free accommodation at the historic Point Reyes Lighthouse in California for volunteers working 30 hours a week during the 2026-2027 winter season. 2 sources. https://clstr.news/cluster/point-reyes-lighthouse-offers-free-housing-for-volunteers --- Cite as: Point Reyes Lighthouse volunteer program.
