Poland has initiated plans to develop a sovereign military satellite communication system, which Prime Minister Donald Tusk has referred to as a ‘Polish Starlink’. The project aims to provide the Polish Armed Forces with independent, encrypted, and jam-resistant communications to reduce reliance on third-party commercial providers.

During the MSPO 2026 International Defense Industry Exhibition in Kielce, the state-owned Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) and ICEYE formalized an agreement to develop this MILSATCOM system. Scheduled for implementation between 2026 and 2030, the project will focus on creating a distributed, fully encrypted space segment alongside domestic ground infrastructure under Polish control.

Expanding its space and connectivity efforts, the Polish SatCom Alliance—consisting of Exatel, Energa-Operator, Creotech Instruments, and Phoenix Systems—has signed a memorandum of cooperation to develop a domestic satellite internet access system. This initiative seeks to provide secure, resilient data transmission for critical infrastructure, specifically targeting the energy sector and public administration in regions with insufficient terrestrial networks.

Additionally, PGZ has signed a letter of intent with Viasat to explore cooperation regarding advanced satellite communications and space technologies, including ground station antennas, SATCOM terminals, and military communication satellites, to support the security of the NATO eastern flank.

These national efforts align with broader European Union initiatives to enhance regional sovereignty. The EU is advancing its IRIS² satellite constellation project, described by Commissioner for Defense and Space Andrius Kubilius as a “historic undertaking” to provide secure connectivity and reduce dependence on foreign providers. The IRIS² project plans to launch its first satellites in 2029.
