The Polish government and social observers have raised alarms regarding the impact of digital environments on the nation’s youth.

Government officials have signaled an aggressive stance toward social media platforms, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs Krzysztof Gawkowski stating that the state is prepared to use “extreme measures,” including shutting down platforms like Facebook, X, and Meta, if they fail to address illegal content. This move follows concerns that financial penalties are insufficient to curb the rise of harmful material, specifically AI-generated sexual exploitation of children.

Parallel to these regulatory threats, experts have highlighted a trend of rising youth radicalization. This phenomenon is attributed to unrestricted internet access, which exposes young people to violent, vulgar, and polarizing content.

Concerns regarding the influence of toxic online trends on real-world behavior have intensified following a wave of violent school attacks. On October 8, a 15-year-old entered a primary school in Leszczydol-Nowiny armed with three knives, killing a 37-year-old maintenance worker and injuring two others. Investigators noted the suspect wore a camera-equipped helmet to record the violence, suggesting the act may have been intended to “fulfill an online challenge or gain internet notoriety.”

This incident followed a similar attack in Ostroleka on October 7, where a 19-year-old injured several people. Authorities in Sierpc have also made arrests in connection with recent school-related violence.
