Poland is undergoing a significant energy transition, positioning the Pomerania region as a major industrial and energy hub. This shift involves moving the country’s energy production center from the south to the north through massive investments in nuclear and offshore wind power. Planned developments include a nuclear power plant with nearly 4 GW of capacity and offshore wind expansion projected to reach up to 18 GW by 2040.

To bolster energy security and reduce reliance on Russian gas, Poland is also constructing its first offshore gas terminal near Gdańsk. This project utilizes a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in the Baltic Sea. The construction process has required Polish navy minesweepers to clear unexploded World War II ordnance and must contend with environmental challenges such as severe storms and sea ice.

A recent report titled ‘W stronę morza. Potencjał gospodarczy północnych regionów Polski’ (Towards the sea. Economic potential of northern Polish regions) reinforces this strategic shift. Prepared by Polityka Insight and Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, the document identifies the Pomerania region as a critical driver for national economic development. Marek Woszczyk, CEO of Polskie Elektrownie Jądrowe, noted that the construction of the Lubiatowo-Kopalino nuclear power plant will serve as a pillar for this transformation. Currently, the Pomeranian and West Pomeranian voivodeships account for 9.5 percent of Poland’s national GDP, a figure expected to rise as these large-scale energy and transport projects progress.
