S&P Dow Jones Indices has announced the reclassification of Poland from an emerging market to a developed market. The change is scheduled to take effect in September 2027, at which point Poland is expected to become the 27th country in the S&P Developed BMI index.

Polish officials have characterized the decision as a confirmation of the nation’s growing economic position, noting that Poland is currently the fastest-growing large economy in the EU and possesses a GDP exceeding $1 trillion. Tomasz Bardziłowski, President of the Warsaw Stock Exchange, stated the move reflects the maturity of the Polish capital market and efforts to strengthen market fundamentals.

While the reclassification follows similar moves by FTSE Russell and STOXX, MSCI continues to classify Poland as an emerging market due to concerns regarding stock market accessibility for foreign investors. The upgrade is expected to potentially reduce the cost of capital for Polish companies by lowering the required risk premium from investors, though Poland’s estimated weight in the S&P Developed BMI will be relatively small, between 0.10% and 0.15%.
