Reports of police misconduct and corruption in India have emerged involving officers in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

In August, the Anti-Corruption Bureau arrested four officers from the Ayodhya Cyber Crime Police Station after they allegedly traveled to Sikar, Rajasthan, to collect a 2.8 lakh rupee bribe. The officers were reportedly attempting to remove a complainant’s brother from a registered case. The accused have been suspended pending investigation.

In September, seven police officers in Rajasthan’s Bharatpur district were booked following allegations of extortion and assault involving a 16-year-old minor. A complaint alleges that officers demanded monthly payments from the minor’s rental car business and subsequently used physical assault and the planting of an illegal firearm to implicate him after payments ceased. Local police leadership has dismissed these allegations as baseless, citing the minor’s prior criminal history.
